Quilting - Week 1 Cathedral Windows

This week we kick off the first row of our quilting journey. If you have joined your quilt top I would highly recommend 'quilting in the ditch' of your whole quilt before you start adding in the details. This will keep everything nice and straight.

If your going to use the 'Quilt as you go' technique, you can just ditch stitch each row as you come to it.

Without further ado, sit back and relax while Heather gives us the low down on this weeks row.

We would love to see your progress pictures and Heather and I are ready and waiting to give you advise over on the Facebook group, so share your pictures with us for some really good advice and encouragement!

Quilting row 1:

1. If you haven't already, Stitch in the ditch around the cathedral windows. Get as close as you can without actually touching the coloured fabric.

2. Heather recommends stitching across the top of the cathedral windows first, this means you can quilt the entire row without stopping and breaking thread.

Heather used a variegated thread for this portion of the quilting.

3. After stitching the top of the cathedral windows, head back in the opposite direction and complete the bottom half.

4. Now its time to add your swirls. Fill the top background with swirls. Try and keep them consistent in size, but don't stress if they're not! This is your quilt, there's no quilt police around here!

5. Finally head back to the left and complete the swirls on the bottom half of the row.

Congratulations you have completed row 1!

If you would like, you can download a PDF here. This shows you the exact design and size of the swirls made by Heather.

Hugs Paula
