Row 5 - Spinning Star
Once again I have been blown away by the effort, amazing blocks and encouragement you are giving each other on the Slow and Steady Quilt Along Facebook page. Heres a few of my favourite pics from this past fortnight.
This week is the most tricky row of the whole quilt, don't let that stop you though, its also the most beautiful!
I was inspired to draft this block when I saw a block that was created for an Accuquilt competition. It is my favourite block. Its just so pretty! This is the trickiest block of the whole quilt so if you get through this one you should be so proud of yourself!
Without further ado, lets get into it, Here's this weeks video, Scroll down for the written instructions.

Week 5: Slow and Steady Quilt Along by Paula Storm
Spinning Stars Block
Watch this rows video for a detailed step by step tutorial on foundation paper piecing.
Finished Size: 10” Square
Unfinished Size: 10 ½” Square
Total Blocks: 6
Fabric Requirements per block:
3 ½” x width of fabric Background fabric
8 x 4” x 6” coloured fabrics – I chose a rainbow of fabrics
As always, start by giving your fabrics a really good press. You’ll get a much neater finish if you spray your fabric with starch before you cut it.
Cutting Instructions:
Grey Background fabric – Cut 4 x 3 ½” squares
Grey Background fabric – Cut 4 x 5” x 3” stripes
Grey Background fabric – Cut 1 x 2 ½” square
8 x Rainbow fabrics – Cut from each coloured fabric 1 x 4” square and 1 x 3” x 2” strip.
Constructing the block:
Take a sheet of Freezer Paper approximately 12” square (this is enough for one complete block). Iron the freezer paper until it sticks to the ironing board, peel it off the board and iron it again, making sure it picks up some lint from the ironing surface.
Take the pattern page and trace the middle square onto the freezer paper. You will also need to trace out the template for the points of the star. You can make just one of these templates or if you’d like to make the construction process quicker, trace out 4 of these templates.
Carefully and accurately fold the freezer paper on all of the lines.
This block is just like a 9 patch, so construct the pieces in rows and then join the rows together
Refer to the video for detailed instructions on how to complete these blocks,
Top Tips!
Tip 1: You’re working in reverse.
Tip 2: Remember to always iron the WRONG side of your fabric to the freezer paper!
Tip 3: Always sew your fabric’s right sides together!
Finishing your row.
Continue making your blocks until you have a total of 6 blocks.
Join the blocks into a row.
Hang your row on your design wall to admire until next fortnight.
Joining your rows
Don’t join your rows yet if you want to make your quilt a Quilt As You Go project.
If you do want to join the two rows, join a 1.25” strip of the background fabric between the first two rows. You will need to cut 2 x Width of Fabric strips, but you will only need one and a half of the strips, set the remaining half strip aside for next time.
See you next fortnight!
Happy Stitching
